CALL TO ORDER: Chair Rodrigues called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Present were Chair Ernie Rodrigues, Vice Chair Blythe Lind, and Commissioners Lanny Brown and Alyssa Madden; Eileen Hofstadt was on an excused absence. Staff members present were: Craig Bronzan, Director, Roger Stromgren, Landscape/Facilities Manager; Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager; Edie Keller, Administrative Supervisor and Linda Stadlbauer, Administrative Assistant II.

PRESENTATION(S): David Juarez, Eagle Scout candidate, is present for special thanks from the Commission for a job well done in the installation of the memorial monument at Veterans Park.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:

7. ACTION ITEM: Approve the conceptual plans of the redesign of the Portofino parks. (C. Bronzan)
Craig Bronzan introduced Louis Parsons from Discovery Builders who presented the plans for the parks in the Portofino development project. Discussion included details about the dog park surfacing and design, the water play area spray structures, and the amount of shade coverage over benches, tables and possibly the toddler water play area. The final list of issues from the Commission for Parks and Recreation staff to resolve with the developer is; 1) more shade over seating areas, 2) a shade sail over the toddler water play area, 3) add picnic tables in the north park play area, 4) don’t want the straight pole design in the water play area, 5) would like to take a road trip to see a dog park with quarry fines (vs. turf), 6) consider a removable fence with a gate at the dog park (installed in sleeves for easy installation and removal). Craig Bronzan will report back to the Commission with results.

8. DISCUSSION ITEM: Biannual review of the Park and Recreation Commissioner duties. (C. Bronzan)
Craig Bronzan reviewed the Parks and Recreation Commissioner Handbook with those present. He advised the Commission that there would be a training session for the subjects of Conflict of Interest and the Brown Act sometime this fall.

STAFF COMMENTS
Roger Stromgren advised the Commission that the Summerwood Park playground is complete with the exception of an ADA ramp into the play area which the Parks staff will install soon. Also, because the final invoices are expected to come in below bid, we hope to install an additional 2 benches, tables and garbage cans. He advised the Commissioners that the police are investigating the poisoning of the four sycamores on Balfour Road. Heron Park lights have been ordered and will be installed within the next month.

Poldina Scherff advised the Commission that the artwork at Veterans Park has been installed and was dedicated last week. Surveillance cameras have been installed and are aimed at the artwork to help deter vandalism and theft. The Hawaiian Luau Dinner Dance is Friday at the Senior Center. We are in full swing with our programs at the Brentwood Family Aquatic Center and Sunset Park.

Craig Bronzan advised the Commission that the Clubhouse at the Trilogy Vineyards is open. It has a spa, banquet room, swimming pools and a demonstration kitchen. All of these amenities are open to the public. We are also very blessed to have a Finance Department with the help of dedicated City employees that have, once again, been able to project a balanced 2-year budget plan for the City.

Edie Keller reminded the Commission that our next meeting will be at Blue Goose Park.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Brown would like to see some more parking signage at Sunset Park. Poldina Scherff will contact the traffic engineer for the City to see what they can do.

Commissioner Lind reported that the art dedication at Veterans Park went really well. She also complimented Mac Kaiser and his staff at the Aquatic Center for being very welcoming and informative, and the lifeguards for being very attentive. She agrees with Commissioner Brown that the parking at Sunset Park needs to be better managed.

Chair Rodrigues informed the Commission that the dedication of the artwork at Veterans Park went really well. Also, that the East Bay Regional Parks District meeting at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center was good, and that he received a service award from them. He wished Eileen Hofstadt and her family best wishes from the Commission.

Craig Bronzan commented that the District is able to recognize volunteers and that a good suggestion from the City would be David Juarez for his scout project, the granite memorial block at Veterans Park.
