City Government
Settled in 1874, the City of Brentwood was incorporated in 1948 as a General Law City. The City Government consists of an elected four-year term Mayor and four City Council members who serve four-year overlapping terms with municipal elections held every two years. The Council member receiving the most votes during the election earns the honor of serving as the City's Vice-Mayor.

The City Council holds regularly scheduled meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month in Brentwood City Hall Council Chambers starting at 7:00 p.m.

The City Council appoints interested citizens to various commissions, as well as standing and ad hoc committees, to advise the Council in the administration of City matters. These include the Planning Commission, Brentwood Economic Development Committee, and the Bike Path Committee. The City of Brentwood enjoys a supportive and progressive relationship with the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce.

City Services
The City operates its own Police Department, and provides direct water, sewer, and garbage service to the residents of the community. The City of Brentwood receives fire protection services from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District. The City of Brentwood also operates its own Park and Recreation Department.

The City's incorporated boundary currently totals 5,668 acres (1996) within a sphere of influence totaling in excess of 15,000 acres. An additional 3,000 acres are within the Brentwood Planning Area adjacent to the sphere of influence.

Healthcare Services
Current John Muir/Mt Diablo Health System offers the following health care services to the community: Brentwood Therapy Center - for outpatient physical rehabilitation services and the Brentwood Medical Group and Urgent Care - offer family practice and pediatric medical services as well as urgent care services.

Located in Antioch, Kaiser Permanente and Delta Memorial Hospital serve Brentwood. Delta Memorial Hospital offers 24 hour emergency medical services. Brentwood residents can also choose from a variety of local healthcare professionals to meet their personal medical needs. Brentwood Outpatient Surgery Center is located at the John Muir Health Center on the 3rd Floor.
