This month, we’re honored to spotlight Steve Quesada, the City’s longest-tenured employee, whose career spans an incredible 35 years of dedicated service. Hired in 1990 as a Meter Reader, Steve began his journey walking door-to-door, manually recording water meter readings — a meticulous and physically demanding task that laid the foundation for a lasting career in public service.
Early on, Steve’s forward-thinking mindset and practical experience led to a major modernization for the City: he played a key role in implementing the Radio Read system, the automated meter reading technology still in use today. Over the years, Steve’s responsibilities expanded to include leak repairs and assisting residents with water-related questions, always with the same thoughtful attention and commitment to helping the community.
In 1999, Steve made a pivotal career move to join the Construction Inspections team in the Engineering Department. With his deep knowledge of City operations and his eagerness to learn, Steve thrived in the role, picking up new skills on the job and embracing the ever-evolving nature of the work. His dedication and expertise earned him a promotion to Senior Construction Inspector in 2021.
Even after three decades, Steve’s passion for learning hasn't waned. “The position is different every day — and that keeps it interesting,” he says. He appreciates the camaraderie among his coworkers and interdepartmental teams, and while the job can come with late nights, weekend work, and the occasional challenge with contractors or outside agencies, the trust and connections he’s built over the years make it all worthwhile.
A Bay Point native, Steve is also a twin and has built a full life here in Brentwood, where he built his first home and raised his family. He loves the strong sense of community, great schools, and good people that make Brentwood such a special place to live.
Outside of work, Steve’s interests are as diverse as his career. He’s an avid sturgeon fisherman, a guitar collector, and a huge music enthusiast who enjoys all genres — and can often be found enjoying the Concerts in the Park downtown.
Steve lives by a simple but powerful motto passed down from his mom: “Be Good to People.” It’s a principle he brings with him every day — whether he's out in the field, helping a resident, or mentoring the next generation of City employees.
Thank you, Steve, for your decades of service, your leadership, and the positive spirit you bring to our team. We’re proud to work alongside you!
