CLEARER SKIES AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES
March is a beautiful time of year in Brentwood, especially now that it looks like we’ve finally moved past the tule fog.
Fruit trees are in full bloom across town, which is usually the first sign that things are about to get busy on the farms. We’re already looking forward to strawberry u-pick starting up in late March or early April.
As things ramp up, the City is also preparing for several upcoming community events. We are looking for interested candidates to join our team. We currently have seasonal openings in Parks and Recreation, as well as full-time positions in Public Works and the Police Department. If you or someone you know is looking for a role, we’d definitely encourage you to apply.

COMMUNITY SURVEY FOR THE NEXT POLICE CHIEF
Since our former Police Chief retired in September, our 28-year department veteran has served as Interim Chief, and we’re grateful for his outstanding leadership. As City Manager, my goal is to plan for Brentwood’s future. As we move toward 2035 and beyond, I want a Police Chief who will continue the excellence I’ve experienced during my time here.
We are launching a community survey to learn what qualities you’d like to see in our next Police Chief. Your input will help shape leadership and community safety. Thank you for helping build Brentwood’s future!
- City Manager G. Harold Duffey

NOT ALL CRIME FIGHTERS WEAR BADGES. SOME PROCESS UTILITY APPLICATIONS
When a new utility service application came through that didn't quite add up, our Utility Billing staff took a closer look instead of just moving it through the queue.
The ID didn't check out
The property owner had no idea
It turned out the documents were fraudulent
By day's end, collaboration with Brentwood PD and the property owner led to five felony arrests and a formal police report. Water service was never turned on.
This is exactly why we have verification protocols and why having sharp, attentive staff matters just as much as having good procedures on paper. Nice work, Utility Billing team!

MID-YEAR BUDGET UPDATE SHOWS CITY FINANCES REMAIN STABLE
In January, the City Council received the 2025/26 Mid-Year Budget Update. The report confirms that the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, parks, and general operations, remains balanced and financially stable.
Revenues are projected to increase by approximately $345,000, mainly due to sales tax and development activity. Expenses increased by about $220,000 to support operational needs, resulting in a net positive adjustment of approximately $125,000.
The Council also approved an additional $2.2 million payment toward the City’s pension obligations, reducing long-term costs and strengthening the City’s overall financial position.
In addition, the City presented its 10-Year General Fund Fiscal Model. The forecast shows the City is expected to maintain its required 30% reserve level through fiscal year 2034/35, with support from the Budget Stabilization Fund as needed.
What that Means for Residents
-
Essential services remain fully funded. Police, parks, and other core services continue without disruption.
-
The City is living within its means. Ongoing revenues are sufficient to cover ongoing expenses.
-
Financial reserves remain strong. The City maintains a healthy cushion to respond to emergencies or economic changes.
-
Long-term planning is in place. The 10-year outlook helps ensure continued financial stability and thoughtful decision-making.
-
Proactive pension payments today reduce future costs. This strengthens the City’s financial position over time.

During Engineers Week (February 22-28), the City of Brentwood spotlighted Engineering staff in a short video series hosted by L.A.U.N.C.H. Engineer Intern, Amara, a senior at Heritage High School. In each episode, Amara gave viewers a quick look at the people and projects behind the roads, sidewalks, streetlights, and facilities around Brentwood.

LONE TREE WAY UNION PACIFIC AT-GRADE CROSSING PROJECT
Brentwood’s long-planned Lone Tree Way–Union Pacific railroad crossing improvement is finally moving into the design phase after more than 20 years of coordination.
On January 27, 2026, the City Council approved a contract to start engineering design services and approved the project funding allocation. The project will widen Lone Tree Way from two lanes to four lanes, add bike lanes, and address the railroad crossing bottleneck between Medallion Drive and Fairview Avenue. These improvements will help reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve quality of life for residents.
With engineering now in progress, the City will work with all stakeholders to get the project to construction in the next 2-3 years. To learn more about this project, watch the video presentation at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vefbPjKaFTs&t=18420s
